The ‘Kapote Tercero’ suffers an attack of orcas on the way to the Copa del Rey sailing

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The orcas have once again been protagonists in the days prior to the celebration of the Copa del Rey de vela and attacked another of the boats that was heading towards Palma de Mallorca, the ‘Kapote Tercero’.

As indicated by the organization of the Copa del Rey, this new incident, which joins the one suffered by another registered boat, the ‘Corsario’, on December 12 off Barbate (Cádiz), occurred “already within the Mediterranean, off Estepona”, but it only caused material damage since “the crew of Ignacio González Camacho’s boat are safe and without personal injury”.

“They have entered the Estepona Marina at night towed by Salvamento Marítimo since they did not have control of the ship and they will assess damage throughout the day to see if they can reach the Copa del Rey,” they added.

According to Santi Villagran, a crew member of the ‘Kapote Tercero’, there were “three or four orcas” that “bited and went from one side to the other”, “I didn’t think they were going to attack us because we had already passed the area. They would come and leave after two minutes, but then they would come again, I think it lasted five or ten minutes.”

He stressed that “the first ‘blow'” of the cetacean was the one that destroyed the rudder and that the ship was blocked “already at night”. “We had to call Maritime Rescue to pick us up because we were going to the stones,” he added, wishing they could put “fiber” on the piece and be able to sail again.
