World Athletics, governing body of international athletics, announced this Wednesday the postponement until March 2021 of the World Championship on indoor track, which should have been held in the city of Nanjing from March 13 to 15 of this year, due to the appearance and spread of the coronavirus.

One day after stating that he was “carefully monitoring” what is happening in Chinese lands, and being “in close contact with the World Health Organization,” World Athletics has decided to follow the advice of his own team of medical officers.

“We know that China is doing everything possible to contain the new coronavirus and we support them in all their efforts, but it is necessary to provide our athletes, member federations and partners with a clear path forward in what is a complex and rapid movement of circumstances, “said World Athletics.” The advice of our medical team, which is in contact with the World Health Organization, is that the spread of the coronavirus both within from China as outside the country is still at a worrying level and no one should go ahead with any important event that can be postponed“, the press release has continued.

We have considered the possibility of moving the event to another country and we would like to thank the cities that have volunteered to organize the Championships. However, due to the concerns that still exist regarding the spread of the virus outside of China, we have decided not to opt for this option, as it may lead to a new postponement at a later date, “he said.

“The indoor athletics season falls within a narrow calendar (until the end of March) and we believe that We can find an appropriate date in 2021 to organize this event. We would like Nanjing to be the host given the extensive planning and preparation they have put into this event, “the text added.

“We have decided not to cancel the Championships, since many of our athletes would like this event to take place, so we will now work with our athletes, our partners and the Nanjing organizing committee to ensure a date in 2021 to organize this event, “World Athletics has finally reiterated.
