The historic Danube descends to Second Division after fifty years in First

After playing more than 50 consecutive seasons in the Uruguayan First Division, Danubio lost the category on Tuesday by equaling 2-2 against Deportivo Maldonado at the beginning of the fourteenth round of the Clausura Tournament.

Four times Uruguayan First Class champion, the team led by Leonardo Ramos is one of the most successful in conquering a local tournament that has historically been dominated by the big teams.

In addition, the Danube is recognized for its training divisions from which talents such as José María Giménez, Álvaro Recoba, Rubén Sosa, Cristhian Stuani and Edinson Cavani have emerged.

A goal by Argentine César 'Picante' Pereyra in the 94th minute condemned the Danube, that he was in a very difficult situation but that he had won his previous two games.

That goal was the last of a duel in which José Luis Rodríguez and Santiago Mederos had scored for the local team, while Facundo Batista had scored for the visitor.

In this way, the Danubio will play again in the Second Division, something it did for the last time in 1969. Now, Leonardo Ramos' team, who will continue as coach, will have to face the 2022 season in the Second Division, in which Cerro, another of the teams that lost the category, will also play.

Another of the teams that will be in that category will be Atenas SAD, which will be managed by Diego Forlán. Meanwhile, Defensor Sporting, Boston River and Rentistas are the ones who will fight to avoid third place in relegation.

The fourteenth day of the Clausura will continue this Wednesday with the Liverpool-Montevideo City Torque, Cerro-Cerro Largo and Nacional-Boston River matches. On Thursday they will play Fénix-Wanderers, Progreso-Peñarol and Plaza Colonia-River Plate.
