The ‘God’s hand’ It’s one of the ABC in the world of football. All fans of the beautiful game have seen, at least once, the image of Diego Armando Maradona scoring a goal with his hand against England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The Argentine genius managed to introduce the ball into the English goal with a subtle pat, simulating a header that never occurred. In that same game, ‘el Diego’ crossed the entire field, beating the entire English defense, until scoring the most remembered goal in history.
And it is that 26 years later of the ‘Hand of God’, a British auction house has decided to sell the shirt with which Maradona played that match. Sotheby’sthe company in charge of managing the sale, will hold an online auction on its website next April 20th so that any fan can acquire this precious collector’s item.
Brahm Watcherhead of Sotheby’s, has said it was “an iconic moment in sports history” and that you will never have something so good in your hands again. The British company hopes to cash in and intends to turn Maradona’s shirt into the most valuable sporting object in the world. “The idea is to sell the shirt for 5 million euros.” The most expensive sporting item today is a New York Yankees Babe Ruth jersey that sold for 5.1 million euros in 2019. We will have to see what happens with Maradona’s jacket. From April 20 to May 4the ‘Hand of God’ t-shirt will be on display at Sotheby’s headquarters in London.
