The manufacturer EVGA has admitted that a large truck carrying graphics cards has been stolen, one more symptom of the great lack of components that the industry suffers.
The lack of chips is causing somewhat more delays in launches, such as the Galaxy S21 FE. Prices are also rising, and in some cases it is clear that demand far exceeds supply; This is the case of graphics cards, the computer components most sought after by gamers and by cryptocurrency ‘miners’.
The prices of graphics cards have had few quiet moments during this 2021, and finding one at the RRP is like meeting a unicorn. Something very beneficial for manufacturers, who continue to sell absolutely all the units they are capable of producing; until the situation becomes so tense that the robberies begin.
EVGA, one of the most popular manufacturers, has confirmed that point: a shipment of graphics cards headed to one of its distribution centers in California. has been stolen. They have not been able to give more details, as the police investigation is still continuing, but the company suspects that these graphics will end up on the black market.
That is why it has alerted users, advising them that it is illegal in the US to buy or receive stolen products, as well as to help thieves obtain the merchandise. EVGA will also not accept the registration or the guarantee of those stolen graphics, but at the same time it is open to treat each case separately, if any user ends up with a stolen card in their hands without knowing it.
Although the exact model of the stolen graphics is not known, EVGA has confirmed that they belong to the latest generation of Nvidia, the RTX 30 range. If it is the RTX 3080, one of the most sought after, thieves could get about 2,000 euros for each one, based on online stores like eBay, much more than the RRP of 1,199 euros they have in Spain.
This is not the first time a shipment of graphics has been stolen. In late 2020, an MSI factory was ransacked and many units of the RTX 3090 were stolen. The lack of chips is also causing processors to traffic themselves as if it were cocaine.
