The Falcons declare the completion of a second interview with Bill Belichick.

The Falcons declare the completion of a second interview with Bill Belichick.

On Friday, January 19, the Atlanta Falcons concluded a second interview with Bill Belichick for the head coach position.

Belichick has served as the head coach for the New England Patriots for the past twenty-four seasons, during which time he guided the team to seventeen division titles as well as six Super Bowl victories.

Interviews with personnel from other clubs are required to be performed virtually prior to the end of the Divisional Playoff games on Sunday, January 21, in accordance with NFL protocols.

Before ending Wild Card games, virtual interviews were required if the employer side had a Wild Card bye.

Employer clubs must commence virtual interviews three days after their Wild Card match and complete them before the end of Divisional Playoff contests.

Beginning on Monday, January 22, NFL clubs can conduct in-person or virtual interviews with candidates currently employed by NFL clubs whose seasons have concluded.

However, they are not permitted to conduct preliminary interviews with candidates employed by clubs that are attending the Conference Championship Games up until the employer’s season concludes.

On January 8, the Falcons terminated Arthur Smith shortly after three seasons. Being the sole candidate to complete two interviews for the position, Belichick concluded his second session on Friday.

There have been no additional reported interviews with the 71-year-old as he searches for a new position following his release from the New England Patriots this past weekend, following twenty-four seasons, seventeen AFC East championships, and six Super Bowls.

Belichick won his fifth title as head coach when the Patriots overcame a 28-3 deficit in overtime to defeat the Georgia Falcons, 34-28, in Super Bowl LI.

His final Super Bowl victory was in Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

Following George Halas (318) or Don Shula (328) on the list of regular-season victories (302), Belichick ranks second on the all-time wins list (333), trailing only Shula’s 347.

With 467 games coached, Belichick ranks third all-time, behind Halas and Shula (490) and Belichick (497). Additionally, he shares the record for most losses by an NFL head coach with 165, tied with Dan Lewis and Jeff Fisher.

Besides Belichick, Atlanta has interviewed other candidates.  On Friday, Detroit Lions defensive coach Aaron Glenn participated in a virtual interview. Already at 31, he holds the NFL record for the most postseason victories.

At this time, the Falcons have conducted interviews with the following individuals: assistant head coach Anthony Weaver, Baltimore defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, Cincinnati quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan, San Francisco defensive director Steve Wilks, Carolina offensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, and University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.

On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons made public that an interview with Bill Belichick had been concluded in connection with the head coaching position.

His regular-season and playoff records are 302-165 and 31-13, respectively, which is eight victories more than Andy Reid, who is in the second spot with 23.

According to NFL Media, the current New England Patriots coach reportedly met in person with team proprietor Arthur Blank to discuss the position.

Although no agreement is imminent, the two parties are reportedly interested in one another’s services, and discussions are ongoing.

This mutual interest, according to CBS Sports NFL analyst Jonathan Jones, has led to a second in-person interview scheduled for Friday.

During the interview, Belichick will meet with general manager Terry Fontenot, quarterback Ryan Blank, CEO Rich McKay, and president Greg Beadles.

Last week marked the official separation between Belichick and the Patriots, following his twenty-four-year tenure with the team, during which he led the franchise to six Super Bowl victories.

After Belichick declared himself a coaching-free agent, the Falcons had been among the initial candidates cited as potential landing sites, primarily due to the recent dismissal of Arthur Smith.

Jonathan Jones, the lead NFL analyst for CBS Sports, stated at the time that word of Belichick’s departure in Foxborough was circulating that the Falcons were among the most logical destinations for the future Medal of Fame coach.
