Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters is in an induced coma after suffering a fall during training with the national team in the Alicante town of Calpe this week, the country’s cycling federation (KNWU) reported.
Pieters, 30, lost consciousness after the collision and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The Dutch national champion was immediately operated on to relieve the pressure on her brain caused by the fall.
He will remain in an induced coma for “the next few days,” according to the Netherlands Federation. “Only if the doctors let her wake up in a few days, an estimate of the possible damage can be made. The representatives of the family and the KNWU have traveled to the hospital,” adds the Federation.
The Dutch national coach, Fulco van Gulik, has stayed in Spain with a small delegation to support Pieters “whenever possible”, the federation indicates, while the rest of the team flew home as planned.
Pieters, daughter of former European champion Peter Pieters, was proclaimed 2019 road cycling world champion and is also two-time European champion, as well as holding three other indoor world titles.
