The dangerous ‘Omicron parties’ are spreading all over the world: gatherings to get infected and gain immunity

The pandemic caused by Covid-19 has left real madness throughout these two years: deniers of the health crisis, massive parties in the middle of the periods of greatest contagion, demonstrations against masks. However, the latest news has once again left the health sector open-mouthed: omicron festivities.

The meetings to contract this strain are becoming the latest fashion around the entire planet, since experts have assured that the impact of this variant on the body is less, in such a way that the body generates immunity to the virus. A trend similar to what happened years ago with chickenpox parties, where parents brought their children so that they all got infected with the virus at the same time.

“I’ve heard some very scary stories about parties of people trying to get infected. It is very insecure“, said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical leader of the WHO on matters related to COVID-19, as collected Insider.

According to reports collected around the globe, these people try to contract Omicron to “get a natural immunity”, as well as obtaining health certificates, such as the Covid passport, without having to be vaccinated.

Some countries are already taking action

Switzerland has already taken action on the matter. The country’s government has been forced to ban these ‘Covid Parties’ due to their alarming growth. An initiative that is not surprising considering that these meetings “are very widespread and are being carried out by all kinds of people: the vaccinated and reinforced and the anti-vaccines”, as Robert Murphy, executive director of the Havey Institute, told Dr. for Global Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “You would be crazy if you tried to get infected like that. It’s like playing with dynamite,” he added.

The dangers of holding these types of ‘parties’ are tremendously harmful, both for the infected person himself, and for the people around him, as he explains, in an article published in Medscape Infectious Diseases, Charlotte Moser, deputy director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

According to the expert, the true extent of post-illness immunity is still unknown, so contracting the virus will not ensure that the infected person will not be infected again in the future. In addition, the antibodies generated from these meetings do not have to last over time, since there is no research to support this.

On the other hand, the dangers of long-term infection remain to be seen. The world of medicine has already been able to see how a large number of people have suffered from the so-called persistent Covid, sequels that the virus leaves in the body for months after suffering it. In fact, experts still do not know if these problems caused by the virus are transitory or will require medical treatment to alleviate them.

For all these reasons, the ‘Covid Parties’ are not the way to achieve immunization, since the problems they can generate are infinitely greater than their benefits.
