The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), in collaboration with the Andalusian Government and the Plant for the Planet Foundation, will measure the carbon footprint of the Copa del Rey final, which will take place this Saturday at La Cartuja between Real Madrid and CA Osasuna, and will plant more than 9,000 trees, recycle the party banners, distribute recycling bags and promote public transport to be the “most sustainable” final.
The final will serve to make visible the commitment of the Royal Spanish Football Federation with the protection of the planet through its policies in favor of the environment, turning this final into the “sustainable Copa del Rey”.
Measures will be put in place to mitigate the environmental impact of this event, such as the distribution of recycling bags to attendees, the commitment to suppliers of sustainable materials, the recycling of materials used in the match and the promotion of public transport.
The president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, stressed that the cup final will be the first match in Spain in which the amount of carbon dioxide generated will be neutralized, with the planting of nine thousand trees. “It will be a starting point thanks to a Federation that already has the first Sustainable City. There is much to do,” he acknowledged.
“All this will be reinforced by the compensation of the carbon footprint generated in the last 2021-2022 final, an action that will be carried out by the RFEF, with the support of the Junta de Andalucía, hand in hand, this time with the Plant Foundation for the Planet that is carrying out an important reforestation in Andalusia”, the RFEF highlighted in a statement.
In total, nearly 9,000 trees will be planted to mitigate this footprint, offsetting the 2,225 tons of CO2 that were emitted last year in the last edition of the Copa del Rey final, with 4 trees for every ton of carbon dioxide. .
For the director of Plan for the Planet, Jordi Juanós, this initiative represents “a turning point” for many people in Andalusia and the rest of Spain to join the challenge of reforestation.
Among the initiatives aimed at making the Cup final an even more sustainable event, shuttle buses have been planned, so that fans do not have to use private vehicles to access the vicinity of the stadium.
The Sustainable Cup final was officially presented this Friday at an event held at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville, and in which the highest authorities of the entities that collaborate in making the final the “most sustainable event in the tournament history.
