This Thursday, the Higher Sports Council (CSD) hosted and coordinated the first of two days of work with the Council of Europe and the main national sports agents to draw the main lines of the future strategy against hate speech in sport. and the 2024-2026 Action Plan, its financing and the launch of the #SportISRespect campaign.
The meeting is part of the project promoted by the Council of Europe and co-financed by the European Union in Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Montenegro and Spain, which offers technical assistance to public administrations and main representatives of sport to develop strategies to prevent and combat violence in sport.
In addition to the CSD and the Council of Europe, representatives of the Spanish Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia, the State Attorney General's Office, the Hate Crimes and Discrimination Prosecutor's Office, the National Police, the Ministries of the Interior, Equality, Justice and Education, Vocational Training and Sports; the ACB, the Royal Spanish Basketball Federation, LaLiga, ADESP, the Spanish Paralympic Committee and the LGTBI Iberian Sports Group, among others.
These two days will serve for “representatives of sport and public administration to advance in the definition of their objectives, proposals, actions and calendars,” said Raúl Rodríguez, deputy director of Legal Regime of the CSD and coordinator of the project in Spain.
In this sense, Gabriela Matei, coordinator of the Council of Europe project, has highlighted the “pioneer” role of Spain, the first of the six participating countries that has convened the meeting aimed at outlining its national strategy. “What we are doing today and in the coming days and months will impact all of them in one way or another,” she said.

“The European project against hate speech in sport is based on an assessment of the current situation, a mapping of the parties involved and the identification of needs and opportunities to, from there, provide guidance and good practices in the adoption of national strategies to prevent and respond to violence in sport,” the CSD explained in a note.
After the introduction, the day continued with the organization of working groups among the participating entities under the guidance of international experts Balint Josa, Adrian Ionescu and Jonas Burgheim, who will accompany them in the detection of needs, structuring, financing and design of the strategy and campaign.
Likewise, the European project includes the design, application and evaluation of the European #SportISRespect campaign, with specific training and tools to strengthen the role of sports agents in each country. The Spanish athlete Aauri Bokesa will be the ambassador of this initiative in Spain, which will continue her meeting this Friday at the LaLiga headquarters.
