The controversy of the Statutes of women’s football reaches Congress

Last week we already told Mundo Deportivo that the agreement for the Statutes of women’s football is very close and about to be signed between the two parties. On the one hand the 16 clubs of the Association and on the other the 4 led by Real Madrid, Athletic and Barcelona. Even so, and given the delay since its recognition as a professional league that occurred on June 15, the current bloc has reached the Congress of Deputies. Specifically to the Culture and Sports Commission.

As they have confirmed to this newspaper, the Popular Group presented yesterday a non-law proposal asking the government to urgently approve the Statutes of women’s football that allow the holding of elections and the launch of the women’s league .

In a letter to which this newspaper has had access, the political group denounces the situation, especially after the Club Association presented a proposal for these Statutes with 12 of the 16 clubs. According to the writing

“After this agreement, the position of the Higher Sports Council has been to demand the unanimous agreement of the 16 Clubs, obviating the rule of the majority of sports entities. Therefore, this demand from the Government is a blockade that affects the economic and social future of Spanish women’s soccer players.

The delay in the constitution of the Professional Women’s Soccer League makes it impossible to commercialize the audiovisual rights of the competition, as well as the entry of new sponsors, therefore, the Clubs will not have the financial resources necessary to comply with their contractual obligations. To date, not only have the promised 31 million euros not reached, but 2.5 million euros of audiovisual rights have been lost due to the television blackout that the Iberdrola League is currently experiencing ”.

As a consequence of all this, they present this Proposition not of Law:

“one. That the Government of Spain, through the Higher Sports Council, proceed to urgently approve the draft statutes, mostly seconded by the majority of the Women’s Soccer Clubs for the Spanish Women’s Soccer League.

2. That the Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Culture and Sports, provide financial resources to Spanish women’s football that contribute to the full professional development of the competition and the professional careers of female soccer players. “
