The Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race brings together more than 7,000 participants in A Coruña

MADRID, 22 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Central Lechera Asturiana Women’s Race in A Coruña, which celebrated its eleventh edition, brought together more than 7,000 participants on the streets of the Galician city this Sunday, who completed the more than six-kilometre route in a day of sport, solidarity and vindication of the role of women in the world of sport.

At the start, an emotional tribute was paid to Sofía Toro, Olympic gold medallist in London 2012 and world sailing champion. After the race with start and finish on Avenida de Buenos Aires, in Riazor, the ‘Pink Tide’ also joined the one-hour fitness and aerobics festival in the post-finish area.

In terms of sport, the victory went to the Catalan runner Laia González, from the Oysho team, with a time of 24:48, thus achieving her first victory on the national circuit after her third place in the Women’s Race in Seville in 2023 and in Gijón this year.

González was just 10 seconds ahead of second-placed Lara Solsona, from the ‘Mujeres Sanas’ team, who was already third at the same finish line in 2023. Irati Lorza, a teammate of Laia’s Oysho team who was fourth in Vitoria-Gasteiz, took the podium with a closely fought third place (25:02) with her clubmate Inés Papín, who is one of the women who has participated the most times in the Carrera de la Mujer Central Lechera Asturiana de A Coruña. Nerea Sánchez, with a time of 25:15, rounded out the ‘Top 5’.

This year, the event celebrates its twentieth anniversary, a time in which it has encouraged almost one and a half million women from all over Spain to take part in sport in the 151 races held since the first edition. The objectives are to incorporate women into the practice of running and physical exercise; to vindicate their role in the world of sport; and to fight against cancer, especially breast cancer.

The test has always raised funds to promote cancer research and raise awareness of the importance of early prevention, as well as combat gender violence and the social and educational inequalities suffered by women in all areas. In total, the amount donated in the previous 19 years has amounted to 1,779,277 euros, which has been allocated mostly to the Spanish Association Against Cancer and all kinds of charitable and scientific projects, foundations and NGOs.

At the end of the circuit, a donation of 80,000 euros will be made to the Spanish Association Against Cancer and in this 2024 edition, donations of 1,000 euros will also be made to Wanawake Mujer, which fights against female genital mutilation and other forms of violence against women; GEICAM Foundation, leaders in breast cancer research; the Clara Campoamor Association that defends women’s rights in all areas; and Intravenus, the Association of creators to give visibility and support to women in cancer processes.

In addition, in A Coruña there were 50 bibs available in total solidarity in favour of the Association of Women with Disabilities of Galicia ACADAR, an entity that promotes, coordinates and defends the rights of women with disabilities. Participants can also collaborate, within the +SOLIDARIAS campaign, with Bolboretas A Coruña, a non-profit, sports and cultural association, formed by people who have suffered or suffer from breast cancer and without age limit. It is the first Dragon Boat association in Galicia.

In 2024, the Spanish Association for Metastatic Breast Cancer is also present in all cities of the national circuit. The #laMquefalta movement, launched by the Daiichi Sankyo | AstraZeneca Alliance and the Spanish Association for Metastatic Breast Cancer (ACMM), calls for action by citizens, companies and institutions to make the metastatic stage of breast cancer visible and raise awareness in society about this disease. The conversation about breast cancer is incomplete if we do not talk about metastasis, and it is currently little known by the population. With this movement, we want to focus especially on the peculiarities, the approach and the needs of patients with metastatic breast cancer, which affects more people in our country every year.

The national circuit of the Central Lechera Asturiana 2024 Women’s Race has the main sponsorship of Central Lechera Asturiana, Oysho and Banco Santander, together with TotalEnergies and Marlene, Volvo is the official vehicle of the circuit, with the collaboration of Druni, Nestlé Fitness and Daiichi-Sankyo Astrazeneca. The local sponsors are Termaria Casa del Agua, Fundación San Rafael, Northius, Nordés Ancín, La Piadina, La Voz de Galicia and Gadis, with the support of the City Council of A Coruña.
