Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes announce the proposal with Morocco at the UEFA meeting prior to the FIFA Congress in Kigali
MADRID, 15 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) made official the agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to include Morocco in the candidacy to organize the 2030 World Cup, a decision exposed this Wednesday to the representatives of the rest of the European federations in the UEFA meeting organized within the framework of the FIFA Congress that will take place this Thursday in Kigali.
“Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes have announced this decision to the representatives of the European federations, at the UEFA meeting organized within the framework of the FIFA Congress that will take place tomorrow in Kigali. The announcement has been received very positively”, says the RFEF in an official statement.
The representatives of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation will shortly join the 2030 World Cup Coordination Committee, led by Antonio Laranjo. The bid will meet the deadlines set out in the FIFA order book.
“This is a historic candidacy, since for the first time a men’s World Cup would be held jointly on two different continents. The union of the three neighboring countries will contribute to strengthening ties between Europe and Africa, as well as the entire Mediterranean; and will inspire thousands of young people from both continents in a common project that has its fundamental axis in the impact that football can have on the sporting and social development of the region,” added the RFEF in its statement.
On Tuesday the king of the African country, Mohammed VI, announced that Morocco was joining the candidacy of Spain and Portugal, although this Wednesday it was the RFEF that confirmed the news. “Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes, presidents of the RFEF and FPF respectively, have reached an agreement with Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), to form the most powerful 2030 World Cup candidacy possible in social terms, sports and cultural, as well as infrastructures”, says the note.
On the other hand, the RFEF explains that the incorporation of Morocco does not affect the number of venues that will correspond to Spain and Portugal, while keeping Ukraine’s participation in the project on the agenda, “which will materialize at the appropriate time, due to the situation that both the country and the President of the AUF, Andriy Pavelko, currently suspended from office, are going through”.
“The RFEF and the FPF want to thank the governments of Spain and Portugal for the support they have given to this project at the Spanish-Portuguese summit,” ends the note from the Spanish Federation.
