The Castilian capital decrees two days of mourning for the death of the former cyclist

AVILA, 8 Jun. (SportsFinding) –

The Caprotti Palace in Ávila hosts from this afternoon the burning chapel of ex-cyclist Julio Jiménez, who has died at the age of 87 as a result of injuries sustained in an accident, and for whose death the Castilian-Leonese capital has decreed two days of mourning official.

The Ávila City Council has announced the opening of this burning chapel in a statement in which it has lamented the death of the athlete and has conveyed its condolences to family and friends.

In this way, those from Avila who so wish will be able to say their last goodbye to the former cyclist, whose sporting merits include five stages won in the Tour de France, four in the Giro d’Italia and three in the Vuelta a España.

Likewise, the Ávila City Council has decreed two days of official mourning for his death in which the city flag will fly at half-staff in the municipal buildings. The mayor of Ávila, Jesús Manuel Sánchez Cabrera, has highlighted Jiménez’s sporting career, which has a street in the city –the Cuesta de Julio Jiménez– and his “profound human quality”.

The funeral for Julio Jiménez will take place this Thursday, starting at 12 noon, in the parish of La Sagrada Familia in Ávila, sources close to the former cyclist informed Europa Press.
