The big kiss between Julian Assange, free, with his wife upon arriving in Australia

The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, landed this Wednesday in Canberra, Australiathe final stopover of a journey that began with his release from prison on Tuesday in the United Kingdom and continued with several stops, including one in the Northern Mariana Islands to sign the judicial agreement that has made his freedom possible. The journalist has spent more than five years in prisonSince April 11, 2019, he has been held in the high-security Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom.

Upon his arrival on Australian soil, the founder of Wikileaks was received by members of his family, including his wife, Stella Assange., which has opened a fundraising campaign to compensate the Australian Government for the expense of the charter flight chartered for repatriation. They have merged in a kiss and a hug with which they have celebrated their freedom.

Assange agreed to plead guilty to espionage before the United States Justice for the leak of thousands of secret documents, in exchange for the North American authorities serving the sentence with the time he has spent under arrest. He has lived the last five years in a maximum security prison in the United Kingdom, while the previous seven were spent locked up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

As part of the agreement, the US Department of Justice has indicated that Assange is prohibited from returning to the United States without permission. Furthermore, he has indicated that with this Wednesday’s appearance before the judge on Saipan Island, the case, which dates back to 2018, when he was charged for the first time, is officially “concluded.”

On 24 March 2022, Assange married lawyer Stella Moris inside the Belmarsh high-security prison.. Parents of little Gabriel and Max, who at that time were 4 and 3 years old, respectively, they had been engaged for seven years. Assange and Moris have been together for nearly 15 years. She is a South African lawyer whom Assange met when he joined her legal team during the seven years Assange was in the Ecuadorian embassy in London awaiting political asylum to avoid deportation.

According to Moris in an interview with CBS News in 2020, It was difficult to start a relationship with a person in Assange’s situation. “We found ways to be private. We had a tent in his room that we put fairy lights in,” she explained. At all times Moris has stressed that Assange is the person with whom he wanted to build a family.
