MADRID, 14 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
This year’s Formula 1 World Championship will again have three Sprint format races and with the novelty that the scoring system will be modified, as confirmed by the organizers on Monday.
“The F-1 Commission has approved plans to run the Sprint format over three weekends, at Imola (Italy), the Red Bull Ring (Austria) and Interlagos (Brazil), in 2022,” the World Cup website said. .
This novelty, which was introduced last year, consists of a 100-kilometre race, lasting between 25 and 30 minutes each, the result of which determined the grid for Sunday’s race.
In 2021 the chosen Grands Prix were Great Britain (Silverstone), Italy (Monza) and Brazil (Interlagos), the latter being the only one that repeats since the Emilia-Romagna and Austria replace the the first two, following “discussions with all the key stakeholders, including the FIA, and all the teams”.
On the other hand, the points system has been modified and now the top eight drivers will score points, whereas last season it was only the top three. The winner will add eight and from there it will be discounted up to one for the eighth.
The F-1 Commission also decided that the driver who sets the fastest time in qualifying, which in Sprint weekends will take place on Friday, will be awarded pole position, while the year after that distinction corresponded to the winner of the new format. Qualifying will continue to determine the grid for the Sprint race and the order of that for Sunday’s.
