The Teatro Soho Caixabank and Balearia were proclaimed absolute champions this Saturday of the historic 40th edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE sailing, held in the waters of Palma de Mallorca, after becoming the boats with “best compensated time” and “best time real” after six days of competition.
The nine titles distributed this Saturday were resolved in the final test after a very close penultimate day, and the Spanish Teatro Soho Caixabank and Balearia achieved the absolute trophies. The boat armed by Javier Banderas, skippered by Daniel Cuevas and with the tactics of Luis Doreste was the best, winning nine of the 11 partials of the tournament.
While the Balearia commanded with authority in the Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup class. María Bover’s boat won a three-way battle with Natalia Vía-Dufresne’s Dorsia Covirán and Eva González’s Soho Boutique Hotels. The RCNP team won the Preview Series, stayed ahead of the provisional every day except the first of the Final Series and finished with a four-point lead over 2021 champions Dorsia Covirán.
The day was held without incident for the sixth consecutive day and the reliable Embat blew with enough intensity to guarantee the dispute of the cup final, something that has been taking place since the first edition in 1982. This Saturday, two teams revalidated the title and seven debuted in the Copa del Rey de Vela gold book.
The champions of the 40 Copa del Rey MAPFRE are the Germans Hatari in ClubSwan 50, Red Bandit in BMW ORC 1 and Meerblick Fun in BMW ORC 4; Italians Scugnizza in BMW ORC 3 and G Spot in ClubSwan 36; and the Spaniards Nadir at ClubSwan 42, Teatro Soho Caixabank at BMW ORC 2, Balearia at Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup and Alcaidesa Marina at Herbalife J70.
For his part, King Felipe VI skippered the Aifos 500 to complete his participation in the Cup with a victory in the last heat of the BMW ORC 1 class, which lifted him to fifth position in the general classification.
