Tavares: “We are in a club that never gives up”

MADRID, 19 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Real Madrid center Edy Tavares highlighted his team’s ability to fight to end up winning the Endesa League this Sunday against Barça, in a season that once again put them to the test but against which they “never” gave up.

“We were able to keep up the rhythm of the game because we know it was a very dangerous game. We were focused, we had to stay that way for 40 minutes. We were able to stay calm in difficult moments,” he said at a press conference at the WiZink Center.

The Madrid giant was the MVP of the finals, with a PIR of 41 this Sunday in the sentence at the Palace. “It’s an incredible feeling to be able to win here at home with our people, it’s been a difficult year but we’ve known how to stay calm. The League comes from overcoming difficult times”, he pointed out.

Tavares explained that the white team was also able to learn from the many defeats against the Catalans. “What has changed are the defeats against them. We have lost many games and that has helped us adjust things. Losing is not always bad, it helps to improve and know what to do, like now. Those games have helped us to be prepared” , he claimed.

“Me and Poirier are a more physical couple in the inside game, we had to take advantage of this. We had to be vigilant and we had it assumed, we had to do something extra if we wanted to win this game. I had to keep doing the same. I know that From the defense I can help my team a lot”, he commented.

“The statistics were secondary, the important thing is to win and see people happy, to see Pablo happy, it is the most important thing for us, to see people happy. Everything has happened to us. Last year we finished the League with seven players available. All those moments make us stronger. We had low experiences, even the coach has gone. We have never had a negative mentality, we had no good luck, but we always have to take a step forward, “he insisted.

The Cape Verdean explained his feelings when he heard the “MVP, MVP” from the stands. “What I thought was that I had to finish the game for it to come true. In basketball you can’t trust it for a second, you can’t celebrate until it’s over, to value that moment that they were giving me,” he said.

“It’s not just this year. Three years ago the pandemic came, a lot of things have happened to us. It’s something incredible for us, we’ve known how to raise our heads when it seemed that things weren’t going well. Even without a base and everything. We’re in a a club that never gives up. We look for a way to raise our heads, the Cup and the Euroleague hurt us a lot, but every game you lose, you learn from everything, everything makes you stronger”, he concluded.
