Tahiti, Chile, Antigua & Barbuda and South Africa maintain the leadership in their groups of the Gran Canaria SSL Gold Cup

MADRID, 11 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The boats from Tahiti, Chile, Antigua & Barbuda and South Africa maintained their respective group leaders this Saturday in the Gran Canaria SSL Gold Cup, the Sailing World Cup that will be held until December 3 with the participation of 40 countries under a format of six knockout phases, similar to that of a soccer World Cup.

The waters of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria brought together the SSL47 fleet again for the second day of the thirty-second final. Although the wind did not make it easy with constant changes in direction and intensity, the work of the Regatta Committee made it possible to complete the planned program with a new and tight confrontation for each group.

In Group 2, which premiered this Saturday session, Chile has already accumulated two first places on its scoreboard and has a cushion over its pursuers. The ship led by Pablo Lorca is the one that currently has the most options to get a ticket to the next round, by three points ahead of Portugal, which occupies provisional second place.

In Group 3, the victory went to Ukraine after an exciting fight for almost the entire course with the boats from Antigua & Barbuda and Malaysia. Having added a third place on the first day, this result allows the Ukrainian team of experienced skipper Rodion Luka to close the gap; It is just one point behind the leader, which continues to be Antigua & Barbuda with its second place of the day.

Group 4 was the third to compete and in which the fleet remained the most separated. The Lithuanian team, captained by the Olympic runner-up Gintare Volungeviciute, dominated comfortably and went from occupying third place on the first day to scoring the second partial victory in the competition; With this he rose one place, just one point behind South Africa’s leadership for having obtained a second place this same Saturday.

The fourth and final match was played in Group 1, with Tahiti once again showing potential and scoring their second victory. After losing a point in Friday’s test due to a penalty, Teva Plichart’s team has a total of seven points and two ahead of Slovenia, which is second. Peru, which began this SSL Gold Cup with a retirement in the first round, finished second in the Saturday event.
