Tabárez, honored by Peñarol

The Peñarol this Thursday honored the coach of the Uruguayan team, Oscar Washington Tabárez, who in 1987 led the coal group to the conquest of its fifth Libertadores Cup in a remembered finale in front of America from Cali Colombian.

The 73-year-old technical director, who was at the Campeón del Siglo stadium accompanied by his children where a plaque was discovered and also received a Peñarol shirt with the number 87.

On the plaque you can see the name of the Uruguayan coach accompanied by an image of him lifting the Copa Libertadores.

The award ceremony was given by the president of Peñarol, Ignacio Ruglio, the sports director, Pablo Bengoechea, and the person in charge of institutional relations, Walter 'Indio' Olivera.

Retired as a professional footballer in 1978, Tabárez began his career as a coach in the minor divisions of the Bella Vista club in 1980.

After passing through the sub'20 category in Uruguay and the first in the Danubio and Montevideo Wanderers, 'el Maestro' arrived at Peñarol in 1987, the only year in which he trained the charcoal makers.

During that season, the Uruguayan team won the Copa Libertadores after leaving behind Progreso, Alianza Lima and San Agustín in the first phase, the latter two from Peru, and in the second the Argentines River Plate and Independiente.

In the first final, played on October 21 at the Pascual Guerrero stadium, the visitor fell 2-0 by goals from Paraguayans Juan Manuel Battaglia and Roberto Cabañas.

In the second leg, played at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, Peñarol came back with a new goal from Cabañas and won with scores from Diego Aguirre and Jorge Villar.

On October 31 at the National Stadium in Santiago de Chile, the coal man won 1-0 with an agonizing goal from Diego Aguirre in the 120th minute.

In this way, it added a new Libertadores to its history, taking into account those won in 1960, 1961, 1966 and 1982.
