Stephen Kenny steps down as Ireland coach

MADRID, 23 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) announced this Wednesday the decision not to renew the contract of coach Stephen Kenny, after failing to achieve the goal of qualifying for Euro 2024.

The FAI issued a statement on its official website to reveal the decision after the meeting of its Executive Committee, with CEO, Jonathan Hill, and director of football, Marc Canham.

“The FAI Committee has decided that Stephen Kenny’s contract as senior men’s national team coach will not be renewed after the EURO 2024 qualifying phase,” the note reads.

“Having reviewed the EURO 2024 qualification campaign in its entirety and recognizing how difficult the Group was, the results necessary to achieve our goal of qualifying for the tournament were not achieved,” he added.

Ireland finished fourth in Group B on the road to next summer’s European event in Germany, behind France, the Netherlands and Greece, with two wins and six losses in eight games. Kenny had taken charge of the Irish team in April 2020. The FAI added that they are already searching for a new coaching staff for the men’s team.
