Starless Canada sweeps away hosts Italy in Davis Cup

Great Britain beats Australia 1-2 in Group B, while the USA does the same against Croatia in Group D

The Canadian tennis team won this Wednesday by a clear 3-0 against the Italian team during matchday 2 in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals, while Great Britain beat Australia (1-2) and the United States did the same against Croatia (1-2).

In Group A, which is being played in Bologna (Italy), a starless Canada surprised the host team. With two players outside the ‘top 150’ of the world ranking, the maple leaf team beat the ‘azzurri’ and embittered the local fans.

In the opening match of this pairing, Alexis Galarneau beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(8) and 6-4; In the second individual duel, Gabriel Diallo defeated Lorenzo Musetti 7-5 and 6-4; and in the doubles, Vasek Pospisil accompanied Galarneau himself to beat Simone Bolelli and Matteo Arnaldi by (4)6-7, 6-4 and 7-6(3).

Within Group B, which is being played in Manchester (United Kingdom), the local team took the lead in its matchup with Australia thanks to the individual matches. First, Jack Draper beat Thanasi Kokkinakis (6)6-7, 6-3 and 7-6(4); and then, Daniel Evans won 6-1, 2-6 and 6-4 over Alex de Minaur.

However, the Australian team made up the result by winning the doubles by Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell by 7-6(5) and 6-4 over Daniel Evans himself along with Neal Skupski. In that same group, France leads thanks to its 3-0 victory the day before against the Swiss team.

In Group D, another host entered the scene. It was the Croatian team at the Split venue, but with a loss to the USA in a match decided in the doubles. Before, Mackenzie McDonald had beaten Dino Prizmic (6-4 and 6-2) and Croatia had equalized the contest with Borna Gojo’s 6-4 and 7-6(6) over Frances Tiafoe.

And in the final match, American Austin Krajicek and his compatriot Rajeev Ram beat Croatian veterans Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic 7-6(5), (3)6-7 and 6-2, thanks to a battle of almost two and a half hours on the track.
