Sporting wins a controversial derby and storms the playoffs

MADRID, 10 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sporting de Gijón beat Real Oviedo (1-0) this Saturday on matchday 26 held at the El Molinón Stadium – Enrique Castro 'Quini', an Asturian derby with controversy that helped the locals place third, while Espanyol fell (2-0) against Racing de Santander.

The Asturian derby was red and white thanks to Nacho Méndez's 1-0 score after two minutes. There were no more goals and there was a lot of tension, especially with the visitors demanding two penalties. Oviedo had no luck with the VAR or with the referee's criteria, who did not see a maximum penalty in a contact by Varane on Paulino and in the other action he decided that it had not been inside the area despite appearing to be on the line.

It was the outcome of a derby that did not move from El Molinón, to end Sporting's bad streak against its neighbor and prevent those from Oviedo from getting close to the 'Top 6'. With 42 points and after two defeats, those from Gijón are provisionally third.

Meanwhile, Espanyol ruined the high of their victory last week against Levante with a poor performance at El Sardinero. The goal in the first minute from Arana and another from Peque still in the first half hour cut the 'pericas' goals. The Cantabrians thus approach the noble zone while Espanyol, provisional fifth, returns to doubts about Luis Miguel Ramis.

On the other hand, Elche suffered an unexpected setback in their promotion ambitions when they lost (1-0) to bottom team Amorebieta, despite being close to scoring, especially in the first half. Furthermore, Eldense and Huesca signed a fair distribution without goals, making the Huesca team more uncomfortable and close to relegation.
