Spain’s Marta Huerta will referee the opening match of the Women’s EURO

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spain’s Marta Huerta de Aza will referee the opening match of the Women’s European Football Championship between the hosts England and Austria, which takes place this Wednesday at Old Trafford, reports the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Thus, Marta Huerta de Aza will not only make history by being the first Spanish collegiate to be the main referee in a European Championship, but she will make her debut in the first match of the tournament at Old Trafford, with capacity for 74,140 spectators and where a record attendance is expected in a Women’s Euro Cup.

Huerta de Aza will be accompanied on the wing by Guadalupe Porras, while two other Spaniards, José María Sánchez Martínez and Guillermo Cuadra Fernández, are designated as VAR and AVAR referees, respectively.

Huerta de Aza and Guadalupe Porras are also preselected by FIFA to be in the next absolute Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which will take place next summer 2023.
