Spain wins three golds and two bronzes on the third day of the Paralympic Swimming World Cup

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

On Tuesday, Spain won a total of five new medals at the Paralympic Swimming World Championship, which is being held in Madeira (Portugal) until June 18, thanks to the three golds won by Marta Fernández, who signed a double, Michelle Alonso and the bronzes achieved by Miguel Luque and the 4×50 style relay 20 points.

The great protagonist of the Spanish delegation was Marta Fernández, from Burgos, who had to swim two finals in just half an hour, but not even that could cope with her potential. First it was the turn of the 150 S4 styles, where she was far superior to all her rivals, thus scoring the first gold of the afternoon.

In second place was the final of 50 butterfly S5, where he broke the record for the championships with a time of 41.91 to sign a brilliant individual performance. Fernández’s gold was joined by Michelle Alonso, who forgot a major shoulder injury to prevail in the 100 breaststroke S14, the same in which she has been proclaimed three times Paralympic champion (London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020).

For his part, Miguel Luque added a bronze this Tuesday –in 150 S4 styles–, to the silver achieved on the first day. In a very even test, the Catalan got into third position beating the Italian Efrem Morelli, the same one who two days before snatched the gold. In this test, the also Spanish Xavi Torres and Manuel Martínez were fifth and eighth, respectively.

In addition, the 4×50 style 20 point relay, made up of Toni Ponce, Miguel Luque, Marta Fernández and Nahia Zudaire took the bronze after having a tough fight with Italy, which finally won the silver medal.

In other tests, José Antonio Mari finished fourth in the 100 butterfly S9, just 13 hundredths of the bronze. Also Marian Polo, fourth, just over a second from going up to the box. And the same position was held by David Sánchez in the 200 S6 styles test, although further from third position.

Other Spaniards who took part in the finals of this new round of the World Championship were Sarai Gascón, sixth in the 100 butterfly S9, the same position as Borja Sanz in the 50 freestyle S12 and Sergio Martos in the 100 butterfly S8; Iván Salguero, seventh in the 50 freestyle S13, the same position as Jacobo Garrido in the 100 butterfly S9, while Anastasiya Dmytriv was eighth in the 100 butterfly S9, as was Carlos Martínez in the 100 butterfly S8.

With these five new metals obtained this Tuesday, Spain is placed in eighth place in the medal table, with a total of three golds, five silvers and seven bronzes. Italy continues to lead the World Cup after three days of competition.
