Spain will face South Africa and Canada to remain in the rugby sevens World Series

MADRID, 1 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s rugby seven team will face South Africa to remain in the World Series after finishing third in the group stage of the HSBC SVNS in Madrid, while the men’s team, second, will do so against Canada.

After losing 7-12 to China and beating Poland 45-0 on Friday, the ‘Leonas7s’ sought the second group position against Japan that would ensure a better chance of permanence. After a great start by the Japanese, who began with a try by Ohtani, the team of María Ribera and Alberto Socías turned the match around and went ahead at half-time thanks to the scores of Juana Stella and Paula Requena (7-14 ).

In the second half, Japan took the ball and the shots of Tsutsumi and Hirano made the final score 26-14, leaving the Asians second and Spain third. With this result, The ‘Leonas7s’ will face South Africa (3:32 p.m.), second in Group B, for a place in the HSBC SVNS for the 2024-25 season. In total, they have faced the Africans four times in these Series – two wins and two losses.

For their part, the pupils of Paco Hernández and Matías Tudela closed the group stage with three victories in three games. To Friday’s victories against Chile (29-12) and against Kenya (10-5), Spain has added its third victory with a solid 31-0 against Samoa.

Pol Pla, Juan Ramos twice, Alejandro Laforga and Jeremy Trevithick added the five Spanish brands. Canada, which has completed Group A with a total of defeats and which Spain has won four times this campaign, will be the rival of the men’s team (6:08 p.m.) for a place on the world circuit next season.
