Spain loses to Ireland and is third in the WXV3

MADRID, 28 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s XV rugby team lost (13-15) against Ireland this Saturday in their last World Rugby WXV3 match, meaning they could not fight for gold to close the podium.

The ‘Lionesses’ continued their progression in the tournament to fight for gold until the last minute, but a great second half by the XV del Trébol prevented the Spanish victory. The two best teams from level 3 of the WXV faced each other in the last match of the championship with the prize of winning the category and with the goal achieved of giving Europe one more place in the WXV2.

The performance of Juan González’s team in Dubai ensured that Spain would play a round-trip tie in 2024 against the sixth team in the Six Nations to go to the 2025 World Cup in England and ascend to level 2 of the competition.

The ‘Lionesses’ were patient after a few first minutes from Ireland, with the order to force the temporary expulsion of Edel McMahon which relieved the offensive pressure of the Clover XV. Spain went into the break with a promising 3-13, with Claudia Peña in the rehearsal and Amalia Argudo in the penalty shots.

In the second half, Ireland managed to enter the Spanish scoring zone with a strong lead in the 60th minute, culminating in the Grace Moore play. A few minutes later the Emerald Isle team hit again with another maul, this time the try being the work of their heeler, Neve Jones.
