Spain extends its reign at the European Under-19 Women’s Football Championship

Third consecutive title for the Spanish team after beating the Netherlands in extra time

MADRID, 27 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish U-19 women’s football team was crowned European champion on Saturday after beating (2-1) the Netherlands in the final of the tournament held in Kaunas (Lithuania), thanks to a goal by Intza Eguiguren in the 118th minute.

Spain thus lifted their third consecutive European Championship and the sixth of their list of titles, equalling Germany as the most successful team with six titles. Marisa put Sonia Bermúdez’s team ahead after six minutes, first-time striker for a Dutch team that had not conceded in three games.

The ‘Oranje’, who had beaten Spain in the group stage, went from strength to strength, with a couple of chances midway through the first half. The restart confirmed the Netherlands’ advance and the fired-up Tolhoek made it 1-1 on the hour mark.

Spain regained control in the final stretch, but in stoppage time they fought for the gold with a good chance for each team, with the goalkeepers appearing in time. The tie marked the first part of extra time and, with the fate of penalties increasingly closer, Eguiguren appeared almost at the last minute for a ‘Roja’ that continues to guarantee its future based on titles.
