Spain defeats Denmark in Alicante with record attendance

The Spanish women’s volleyball team closes the qualifying tournament for the European Championship with victory with 4,300 people in the stands

MADRID, 11 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s volleyball team closed the qualifying tournament for the European Championship with victory by quickly defeating Denmark (25-16/25-21/25-22), in a match with a record attendance for the team women’s national championship with 4,300 fans in the stands of the Pedro Ferrándiz Pavilion in Alicante.

During the match, the Danes went from less to more, while the Spanish were faithful to their solid game throughout the match. Supported by the more than 4,000 people who cheered from the stands, Pascual Saurín’s men added their fifth victory in the Pre-European Championship and got their ticket to the European Championship, with second place in group E after the resounding victory of Slovakia in Latvia.

Spain’s Zoi Mavrommatis was key early on, ending Denmark’s early lead thanks to a great series of serves, including three direct points that launched Spain to acquire an income that the wisdom and experience of Patricia Aranda would manage. María Schlegel’s shots, the pressure with the serve and the control in defense forced the Danish coach to exhaust his time-outs with 16-9 on the scoreboard.

But it did not help much, since the team continued to increase its advantage until it was 25-16 in the first quarter. The ‘Leonas’ controlled the pace of the match and quickly won the first advantages of the second round, also supported by the shots of Prol, Jiménez and Varela. At 17-12, this advantage would be definitive, although there were problems closing the second set, which the Spanish would close 25-21.

The third and final set was more even, without much authority on the part of Spain, although the inertia of the two previous sets allowed Spain to win the final victory with a 25-22 score in this set. Thus, they got the ticket and will once again be among the best teams in Europe in the next European.
