MADRID, 22 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish women’s Under-19 basketball team beat the Lithuanian team (67-49) this Friday at the WiZink Center in Madrid to advance to the World Cup semifinals, where they will meet this Saturday against Canada.
The host shone again in the capital, this time in the heart of the city, defeating one of the favorites with authority to reach the fight for the medals. Iyana Martin (18 points and PIR of 21) and Awa Fam (12 and 11 rebounds) were the best.
Spain went very serious in defense, without scoring Lithuanian shots from the field during the first eight minutes. A 13-5 was the first lead for Spain, with Iyana and five consecutive points from Buenavida further opening the difference. Bernat Canut did not allow Lithuania to react, with a time-out in the timid set that ended the bleeding after a 24-7 lead.
Spain secured +15 at halftime (35-20) and, despite some more exchange, kept the lead without question until they enjoyed basketball at the Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid, where the World Cup was held for the final rounds. The host responded in defense and attack, finishing off a Lithuania that came close to 10 points.
