MADRID, 22 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish women’s water polo team tied this Wednesday against Greece (10-10) on the second day of the World Championship, which is being held in Budapest (Hungary), and the round of 16 crossing was complicated due to the difference of ‘ golaverage’ with the helenas.
The team led by Miki Oca offered a high level against an always feared rival, but could not sink their teeth completely to avoid the United States in a hypothetical round of 16. The tie forces Spain to improve the difference facing the last day, where the Greeks come with +27 in their favor.
That is to say, Spain will have to win their match against Thailand with that difference -in addition to what Greece can add in the final day- to get the first place in group D. A tie that could mortgage the crosses of the national team, which this Wednesday was led by Elena Ruiz and Bea Ortiz, authors of four and three goals, respectively.
The Spanish team started out on the scoreboard, but Greece soon replied with a 0-3 run, taking advantage of their rival’s losses. Spain adjusted its defense and evened out the match, although Alexia Anna Kammenou’s team stretched their lead again at the end of the second quarter (4-6) against the Spanish resistance (6-6).
In the third assault, thanks to goals from Elena Ruiz and Paula Leitón, the Greeks trembled before the end of the clash. It was then that Oca’s players, already in the last quarter, even managed to get ahead on the scoreboard with 9-8. Greece answered and it was Elena Ruiz again who settled the tie at 10 with one minute to go.
The next appointment of the Spanish women’s water polo team will take place this Friday, against Thailand, starting at 4:00 p.m. The Thai team has not won a game at the moment after its clear defeat in the debut against Greece (28-1).
