MADRID, 25 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Spain obtained this Friday the bronze medal in the World Chess Championship for teams of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), which was held these days in Jerusalem (Israel), becoming the first Spanish medal in an international team competition.
The Spaniards, who lost in the semifinals against the winner China, beat the powerful Indian team in the fight for third and fourth place in a very close match that had to be decided in a tie-break, according to FIDE in a statement.
The confrontation, which was played over four boards and a double round, ended in 2-2 and 2-2. In the tiebreaker, Jaime Santos from Leon and David Antón from Madrid won their respective games, while Alexei Shirov and Jaime Santos ended in a draw, ensuring a final 3-1.
The final victory went to China, despite not having some of its main figures, such as the world number two Ding Liren. His dominance was such throughout the event that the Asians did not lose a single individual game in the entire competition. In the final, they beat reigning Olympic champions Uzbekistan by a double 2’5-1’5.
