The Spanish men’s rugby team won ((34-15) this Saturday against Namibia at the National Stadium of the Complutense University of Madrid, before more than 5,000 spectators, with a team that is renewed by blow of victory in the recently premiered ‘Challenge Villa de Madrid’.
The rain accompanied a great match where the national coach, Santiago Santos, gave the alternative to new youngsters. Vicente Del Hoyo was in charge of opening the scoring for the Leones, with a trademark essay using the spectacular touch-maul signed by ‘Miguelón’.
After the blond giant from Martorell, Joel Merkler, posed the second mark, it seemed that the match was assured for Spain but the Namibian defender Cliven Loubser stole and reached the goal. On the buzzer and taking advantage of his moment, the African maul entered the rehearsal line to leave a 15-12 lead at halftime.
The second half brought rain to El Central, while debutant Mario Pichardié, positioned on the wing as if it were another three-quarter, caught a clinical kick from Bautista Güemes to land it on the lime line.
He was followed by the elusive scrum-half Kerman Aurrekoetxea with the second mark of this period. Nor did Iñaki Mateu, the former 7s team member, want to miss the rehearsal party, who cut a pass from Barça’s fly-half to set up the fifth Spanish rehearsal and close the match with a great 34-15 victory.
