Spain, against Canada, Djokovic’s Serbia and South Korea

Spain already knows what the path to the seventh Davis Cup champions will be. The team captained by Sergi Bruguera, who sealed their ticket to the finals after winning their playoff tie against Romania, will seek a place in the tournament quarterfinals against teams from Canada, whom they won in the tournament final in 2019; Novak Djokovic’s Serbia, which will repeat his great duels with Rafa Nadal; and South Korea, as determined by the draw held this Tuesday in Malaga, which will host the Final Phase of the tournament from November 21 to 27. The Spanish team will play its three group stage qualifiers at the Valencia venue, at the Fuente de San Luis Pavilion, from September 14 to 18.

In the case of going through the group stage as first, Spain would be measured in the lower part of the table with the second of Group A that could leave between Croatia, Italy, Argentina and Sweden. In the case of passing as second in the group, Spain will meet the champion of Group C at the top of the table which will leave between France, Germany, Belgium and Australia.

bright draw

The incomparable Museum of Malaga hosted this Tuesday the drawing for the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals 2022 where the 16 best teams in the world were located in the event organized by the International Tennis Federation and the Kosmos company led by Gerard Piqué and which will bring the mythical Silver Salad Bowl to the Costa del Sol. Manuel Alejandro Cardenete, Minister of Education and Sports of the Junta de Andalucia, Francisco De la Torre, Mayor of Malaga, David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation, and the Sports Director of the Borja Vivas Provincial Council, were some of the authorities present at the event.

The draw started with precision not exempt from the glamor that surrounds this type of event in the world of racketa. It was previously confirmed that Valencia was chosen as one of the four venues for this group stage of the finals along with Glasgow, Hamburg and Bologna and that they will be played between September 14 and 18; the finals will be in Malaga from November 21 to 27.

David Haggerty, President of the International Tennis Federation, highlighted the suitability of Malaga to host this event and the quality of the best teams in the world. “Last year we saw that there was great excitement, especially in those cities where we were, and we are delighted with what awaits us,” he said. “It is wonderful to be in this city. Malaga is going to be a great host to welcome the fans who will come from all over the world”.

After the introduction, the scheme of four drums with four selections each began to be organized. The draw was not generous with Spain, which has been drawn in a very complicated group with Djokovic’s Serbia, the always tough Canadian team plus South Koreawho ventures like a tough opponent.

tricky rivals

And so the groups remained. Group A is made up of Argentina, Croatia, Italy and Sweden based in Bologna; Group B, which will be played at the Fonteta in Valencia with Spain, Canada, Serbia and South Korea. In Group C we will have France, Germany, Belgium and Australia in Hamburg. And in D the United States, Great Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Glasgow. The first two teams from each of these groups will play the finals in Malaga.

After the draw, Mayor De la Torre addressed a few words highlighting the great honor it is for Malaga to host a competition of such category and Alejandro Cardenete, Minister of Education and Sports of the Board, recalled that two of the six Salad Bowls won by Spain were in Andalusia, specifically in La Cartuja, in Seville: “We are waiting for you in Malaga,” he commented.

It can be said that Malaga is truly committed to this wonderful world of Davis that will be part of its life this year and also in 2023. Málaga also dreams that one of its own, Alejandro Davidovich, will be part of the fight to win the seventh Davis Cup. And of course, Rafa Nadal.
