Spain achieves its fifth European Under-19 women’s championship on penalties

The national team defeats with final agony a Germany that was looking to revive its extensive record

MADRID, 30 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Under-19 women’s team was proclaimed European champion this Sunday by beating Germany on penalties (0-0 and 3-2 in the shootout) in the final of the event organized by Belgium.

Spain defended the title by winning last year in the Czech Republic in a tight final, where they had to suffer although in extra time they had the best option with a ball to the post from Corrales. Germany was closer to the goal in the 90 minutes, but their seventh title and winning again since 2011 vanished.

The goal Txell Font, decisive in the semifinals, stopping a penalty against the Netherlands five minutes from the end, once again became great in the shoot-out with the title at stake. The 120 minutes did not break equality at the Den Dreef Stadium in Leuven.

Alber and Sehitler had the best and almost only chances of the match, both from the Germans, but Font’s intimidation seemed to be taking shape. After the option of Sonia Bermúdez’s men in extra time came a shootout that Spain directed from the start with the ball to Diehm’s post.

Corrales missed but a Font who had been guessing the direction of each German penalty saved Bartz’s next one. Sandra Villafañe had the championship in her boots but the European still wanted more excitement, with the German option to extend the shootout. A horrible launch from Deutsch ended with the 3-2 for a Spain that is once again champion as in 2004, 2017, 2018 and 2022.
