The Spanish tennis player Sara Sorribes got rid of the American Sloane Stephens in two sets (6-1 and 6-3) this morning to continue her fantastic week in the Cleveland (United States) tournament, of the WTA 250 category and that is being played on hard court, and advance firmly to the semifinals.
The woman from Castellón, number 95 in the world, remains unstoppable in the North American tournament, after defeating a rival with authority once again with a better ranking, the local Stephens –number 38–. Sorribes came from surprising in the round of 16, ‘executioner’ of the Russian Veronika Kudermetova and now her ‘victim’ was the American in almost an hour and a quarter.
In the first set, the Spanish made a strong start, quickly making it 0-4 and putting the first set on track, which closed in just over half an hour 6-1. Already in the second set, the duel was leveled with Stephens somewhat more connected, until at 3-3, Sorribes went one step further and took advantage of two breaks to end the match with the final 6-3.
Thus, Spanish women’s tennis is only two games away from achieving the first title of 2023. Sorribes will play to advance to the desired final in Cleveland against the German Tatjana Maria, number 49 in the WTA ranking, another challenge for a national tennis player launched this week .
