Sorribes advances after Zvonareva's withdrawal and Podoroska falls

Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated fifth-seeded Argentine Nadia Podoroska 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals in the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland, in which the Spanish Sara Sorribes will also be, due to the abandonment of her rival, the Russian Vera Zvonareva.

The Argentine tennis player, number 37 in the world, double-faulted on set point in the second and committed four service errors in the third., including back-to-back attempts in Game 10 to establish a match point for Sasnovich, the 99th in the WTA rankings.

Sasnovich took his first opportunity to finish the longest match in the inaugural WTA 250 tournament after 2 hours and 46 minutes. He has played a maximum of 4 hours and 37 minutes in his first two encounters.

“You always have to be ready for a long game,” Sasnovich told a post-game news conference. “You have to be mentally prepared and be prepared to run a lot. I played against a very, very tough opponent, but when you win, it's always sweet. I like it.”

Russia's top seed Daria Kasatkina rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over 19-year-old American Caty McNally, the 33rd in the world, by winning the last four games of the match.
