Billionaire investor George Soros has joined the voices that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has started World War III, and believes that only removing Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping from power will prevent the “destruction of our civilization”.
“We can only hope that Putin and Xi are removed from power before they can destroy our civilization,” Soros specifically says to end his article published in Project Syndicate.
The tycoon assures that the agreement signed between the leaders of Russia and China a few weeks before the invasion of Ukraine is key, and that it implied that the Asian country gave “Putin carte blanche” to invade. “[Xi Jinping] he must be quite sure that his confirmation as China’s ruler for life later this year will be a mere formality. Having concentrated all power in his own hands, Xi has carefully written the scenario by which he will be elevated to the level of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping,” he argues.
Regarding Putin’s intentions, Soros considers that the Russian leader “feels that if he is going to leave his mark on Russian history, it is now or never”, but he believes that the leader “seems to have lost touch with reality” and that “misjudged the situation in the Ukraine” by failing to anticipate the resistance his invading forces would encounter.
“Putin seems to have literally gone mad. He has decided to punish Ukraine for standing up to him and seems to be acting without restraint. He is throwing the entire Russian army into battle and ignoring all the rules of war,” says George Soros, who senses that Xi could be withdrawing support from Putin by having diplomatically advocated for peace.
