Some 30 Spanish athletes with visual disabilities compete in the Birmingham World Cups

About thirty athletes from the Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC) will face the IBSA World Games starting this Monday, the World Cups, the most important international championship after the Paralympic Games for athletes with visual disabilities and that will be held in the city English from Birmingham.

The event, which is held every four years, will bring together more than 1,250 athletes from 70 nations. It will also host three Paralympic sports and eight that are not.

The Spanish delegation will attend the judo, men’s 5-a-side soccer (B1) and B2/B3 soccer competitions, and in the case of the first two, the World Cup is crucial for qualifying for Paris 2024; In addition, in soccer-5, the first three teams of the World Championship qualify.

The competition of the Spanish B1 soccer team will begin on Tuesday, and they will compete in Group C. Led by Paralympian Sergio Alamar, they will face Colombia, France and Mali in this first phase. The first game will be this Wednesday (1:30 p.m. Spanish peninsular time) against the Colombian team.

On the other hand, the tournament for the B2/B3 team will begin on Wednesday and will take place at the Walsall Campus of the University of Wolverhampton. In this category, Spain competes in Group A against Italy, France and England. They will also debut on Wednesday against the hostess (6:30 p.m. Spanish peninsular time).

As for judo, the Paralympic team, which has just signed a full medal at the European Championships in Rotterdam, with a silver for Daniel Gavilán and three bronzes for Sergio Ibáñez, Marta Arce and María Manzanero, comes to the event in an excellent state of form and with a clear objective of getting points for the qualification for the 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition will take place from August 23 to 25 at the Munrow Arena.
