Sito Pons: “This year we are a bit like the ‘pupas’ team”

Jorge Navarro: “The first part of the season has been survival”

MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The director of the Pons Racing team, Sito Pons, regretted this Tuesday being the “pupas” team in the category, attending to the injuries of his drivers Arón Canet and Jorge Navarro, although he stated that the objective is “to be world champions”, in a second part of the World Cup in which they will be “stronger” if the drivers recover.

“Since we have arrived in Europe, Arón has not had a healthy race, we are a bit like the pupas team this year. Even so, we still have options for the World Cup. After the summer we will be stronger if the riders recover”, Pons wished in a press conference at the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques hotel, organized by Stihl, sponsor of the Pons Racing team.

In addition, the event, which Arón Canet, recently operated on for a fracture in the upper part of his nasal septum, was unable to attend, was attended by the Moto 2 rider Jorge Navarro, the Moto-E rider, Jordi Torres and the CEO of Stihl Spain, Bernhard Iber.

Pons, during his speech and answering questions from the media, made it clear that the objective this season is “to recover” and “to be world champions”. “I hope that the second part of the Championship will be much better and that we will have options to fight for the title”, he predicted. “The World Championship is being very interesting, at least it will be a matter of four drivers. That complicates things, it is more difficult to fight against four than against one”, he analyzed.

“When you win you have to control three riders, you have to always stay ahead, three have to fail to go on subtracting them. I told Arón Canet that the World Cup could only be lost, if he did his job well we could win, the only thing he had What to do was not to fail. His speed is higher than that of the others. We don’t have to fail and we will gradually subtract points, but it is very difficult, the others also want to win”, he commented on the options of the Valencian pilot, now fourth in the World Championship 30 points behind the leader.

Thus, he considered that the first victory could give Canet more “confidence” in order to win the title. “It could be a turning point, the drivers race because they want to win. It gives you self-confidence, you have no doubts, you run with much more confidence, safer,” he said, before lamenting that the accidents have prevented Canet from “completing the victory”. “And that weighs,” he acknowledged.

“I told him to think about the World Championship, not to think about winning the race. Maybe thinking about winning a race makes you lose the World Championship,” reflected the former 250cc champion in 1988 and 1989, who assured that he will continue to be part of of the World Cup until there is a “possibility of success”.

On the other hand, Pons stated that the World Cup will be “transforming” in response to advances in energy technologies that are currently being developed. “It is the fourth season of the Moto-E Championship. It seems that the battery is imposing itself in society and racing evolves along with society. I don’t know if it will be the definitive future of sustainability, but for now it seems that way” , valued.

“Work is being done on clean fuels and MotoGP wants to make the Championship as sustainable as possible. Obviously, we have to be as sustainable as possible. The Moto-E World Championship is going to improve, it will be better, with more advanced technology, with races with more impact,” he said.

JORGE NAVARRO: “THE OBJECTIVE IS TO FIGHT FOR THE TOP 5”

During his speech at the event, the rider Jorge Navarro admitted that his season, ninth with a podium, “has been a little more complicated than I expected.” “My objective will be to shine, because the first half of the season has been more about survival than anything else. These remaining races, if we manage to put everything in place, we will be able to enjoy them and shine as we should,” he wished.

“Once you win, the chip changes and to win you have to build confidence step by step. In this second half of the season I hope victory will come. The goal is to have enough points to have fought to get into the top 5” Navarro noted.

Finally, the Moto-E rider Jordi Torres, also from the Pons team, addressed his “bad” campaign, after his fibula fracture at Le Mans, which prevented him from being in the shortlist for the title. “It’s getting heavy for me. We have four races left in which the objective will be to shine, we are not fighting for the Championship. What could have been and has not been. We have a month of recovery to face these last four races in the best possible way. objective will be to put on a show”, settled the two-time champion of the category.
