Jose Mari Bakerolegend of FC Barcelona and a resident of Sitges for more than three decades, received a heartfelt tribute from the Sitges Veterans Association in the Aiguadolç Municipal Camp. The heart of the ‘Dream Team’ and author of the unforgettable goal that saved Barça in Kaiserslautern on the way to their first European Cup in 1992, was surrounded by his friends and the local authorities, who recognized his integration into the emblematic town of Garraf.
The emotional act, which began at eleven in the morning, radiated heat; the meteorological one, of course, but above all the human one. Along with Bakero were some of his former teammates from the ‘Dream Team’, such as Eusebio Sacristan y Santi Ezquerroand with the surprise presence of Juan Carlos Unzue, who put his unique sense of humor when he spoke. The former culé goalkeeper and coach, who on August 24 will sponsor the confrontation in the fight against ELA with Barça. Manchester City at the Camp Nou, thanked Jose Mari for always being by his side in good times and bad moments” and he also sarcastically addressed Eusebio ‘reminding him’ that “for the few goals he scored, one did it to me”.
Bakero, visibly moved, thanked the presence “of so many friends”, making it clear at all times that he felt part of “the family” from Sitges. The mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell. the Councilor for Sports, James Monasteryand the president of the Sitges Veterans Association, James Bouamong other representation positions, put the institutional accent on an essentially close act, which ended with a ‘germanor dinar’ and multiple photos of the many present with the honoree and with the 1992 European Cup.
The eighth ‘rajola’ (plaque) of l’Avinguda de les Estrelles del Fútbol was also unveiled, which was inaugurated in its day with Pasaje Johan Cruyff Nº 14 and pays homage to the footballers who left their mark on Sitges, such as Chus Pereda o Javier UrruticoecheaBakero took a replica of his ‘rajola’ in a morning to remember.
