Sevilla lick their wounds and retain second place in San Mamés

Valencia beat Elche at Mestalla with the controversy of a ‘no goal’

MADRID, 11 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sevilla will remain second classified in the Santander League after beating Athletic Club (0-1) on matchday 17 thanks to a goal from Thomas Delaney just minutes to end the first half, thus forgetting the elimination in the Champions League of the past Wednesday, while Valencia continues to take steps forward to get closer to Europe after finishing Elche (2-1) in a controversial clash.

In San Mamés, Julen Lopetegui’s team got up well from the blow they received in Austria just three days ago. Those of Nervión were practical, very effective, and they knew how to contain an Athletic that is still mired in offensive problems and has already reached eight games without winning. Delaney’s goal, a great goal from outside the area, ended up being enough.

The Andalusians waited until minute 38 to achieve the only goal of the game. A great play down the right side did not find a finisher at the far post, but the rebound went to Montiel’s boots, which he delivered in the face of Delaney. The Dane cushioned the ball and put it into the squad from outside the area.

Those of Marcelino García Toral woke up at that very moment and it was the turn of the defense for the Sevillians. Williams and then Iker Muniain had the clearest chances for the lion box. Even a possible Koundé penalty on the captain was claimed by the locals.

But there was no way to knock down the advantage of Sevilla, which became stronger with the passing of the minutes. Unai Vencedor was the first to try his luck in the second half and Williams, one of the most prominent, did not find a way to beat Bono either. The 0-1 did not move and Sevilla will continue only surpassed by Real Madrid in the standings. The Basques are still in free fall and are already tenth.

For its part, at the Mestalla, Valencia got three very valuable points in the regional derby against Elche (2-1), a match marked by the last goal of Cristiano Piccini and the controversy of the VAR in a ‘no goal’ of Guido Carrillo who was able to change things two minutes from the end.

José Bordalás’ team, who could not direct his players because he had tested positive for coronavirus, went further as the minutes passed and confirmed his good form. It is the second consecutive victory – the third with that of the Cup – thanks to a sober version of the ‘che’, who are already two points behind Europe.

The reaction has given a prize to a Valencia that took 23 minutes to get ahead on the scoreboard this Saturday. It was with a great goal from Gonçalo Guedes, who received a pass from Cillessen, to cut twice and adjust the leather to the furthest post without actually stepping on the area. A flag goal for the home team, who dominated more calmly with the advantage.

Elche – more animated since the arrival of Francisco to the bench – never lost face to the game and ended up drawing a quarter of an hour to go with a goal from Lucas Boyé, the best man in Elche. The goal did not appease Valencia, who turned on the visiting area and made the stake go crazy. Piccini found oil in ’86.

Diakhaby nodded a cross from the wing for the Italian side to shoot Edgar Badia inside the area. The goal was final but Elche did not give up. Carrillo, a few inches from the goal line, had the tie in his boots, but the VAR said that the ball did not pass the lime completely. The defeat leaves Francisco’s men with three points of income over the relegation.

MADNESS OF GOALS IN THE RCDE STADIUM

Espanyol signed their third consecutive victory at home at the expense of the bottom of the championship, Levante, who still do not know the victory. This Saturday, the ‘parakeets’ fished in troubled waters in a clash with many alternatives and with the leading role of Javier Puado, author of a double that was definitive to turn the granota advantage over. The Blue and Whites are already four points behind the European positions.

Darder put the Catalans ahead in six minutes and Jorge de Frutos equalized five later. Before half an hour, Son – assisted by De Frutos himself – gave the initiative to Levante (1-2) who had chances to have scored 1-3 and 1-4. However, the Valencians forgave and were punished in the second half.

The international Raúl de Tomás, who has 8 goals in the League, tied the match and Levante still drew strength to establish the 2-3 in the boots of ‘Comandante’ Morales. The goal seemed final but Espanyol had not said their last word. Puado, in just 16 minutes, scored two goals that knocked down the faith of an evicted Levante.

For their part, Alavés and Getafe shared the points at Mendizorrotza (1-1), a result that does not serve either of them. Joselu rescued the tie with four minutes to go after finishing softly, leaving Enes Unal’s goal ineffective, who put the azulones ahead at 20 minutes with a very powerful shot.

Those of Javi Calleja, who finished with ten by double warning to Lejeune, will continue out of the descent with three mattress points on Getafe, which marks precisely the cut. Those of Quique Sánchez Flores have already accumulated four consecutive games without losing, six of the last twelve points at stake.
