Sevilla learned this Saturday that Manchester City will be their rival for the European Super Cup, whose final will be held on August 16 at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, after the English won the Champions League.
City beat Inter Milan (1-0) in the Champions League final held this Saturday in Istanbul, with a goal from Spanish Rodri. Thus, Pep Guardiola’s team will fight for the Super Cup against a Sevilla that already expected a rival as champion of the Europa League.
On the outskirts of Athens, it will be the fifth time that Sevilla and City have met in an official match, after sharing a group in the initial phase of the Champions League in both the 2015/16 season and the recently played 2022/23 season. with four English victories.
Sevilla have a European Super Cup to their credit, the first they played in 2006 against FC Barcelona, and they lost the five finals they played afterwards. For Manchester City it will be their first time, since until tonight their only continental title was the European Cup Winners’ Cup that they lifted in 1970, three years before the first edition of the Super Cup was held.
