MADRID, 3 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Seven Real Madrid players aspire in Qatar 2022 to emulate Frenchman Raphaël Varane, the last player to win the long-awaited Champions League-World Cup double in the same year, crowning on December 18 in Losail a 2022 in which they were champions of LaLiga Santander and Europe.
The Spaniards Dani Carvajal and Marco Asensio, the Brazilians Vinícius, Rodrygo and Éder Militao, the Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga and the Croatian Luka Modric are the only ones who can join this select club this year.
Up to four Real Madrid players have achieved this achievement in the history of the World Cup, since Christian Karembeu lifted the title with France in 1998 months after also lifting the continental title with the white team.
In Korea and Japan 2002, it was the winger Roberto Carlos who achieved this feat with Brazil, after achieving his second ‘Orejona’, and Sami Khedira repeated the success in 2014 as a player for Real Madrid and the German team. Varane, now in the ranks of Manchester United, sealed his double by winning the title with France in Russia in 2018.
However, the first footballers to achieve the long-awaited double were the Germans Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Gerd Müller, Uli Hoeness, Jupp Kapellmann and Franz Beckenbauer; In 1974, the Federal Republic of Germany won the World Cup held in West Germany, coinciding with Bayern Munich’s victory that same year in the European Cup.
