Serie A hopes to resume competition in May

Series A, in principle, will not resume until April 4, although it is practically impossible for this to be the date on which the competitions begin again. Those infected by COVID-19 continue to rise in Italy (20,000 cases were exceeded yesterday) and suggest that, at best, it can be played again in May.

The League has already made it known that its intention is “to end sporting activity by resuming the championships when sanitary conditions allow it”, something that would be possible by postponing the Euro Cup and next Tuesday everything possible will be done to convince UEFA. Of course, the competitions should end before July 1 for contractual (transfer of players, for example) and financial reasons.

The idea is to start training again after Easter, in mid-April, and return to green two weeks later, on the first weekend of May. If this were not possible, one of the options that earns points is the playoff among the first four to establish the champion, and a playout with the last four for relegation. “It's an old idea of ​​mine,” FIGC President Gabriele Gravina told 'Il Messaggero', “It would be an interesting event and a test to see how they would work.”

If the virus does not make this option viable either, there is a plan on the table to extend the Serie A to 22 teams to avoid problems with the Benevento, which is dominating the Serie B, although nobody likes that scenario and would complicate the future of the championship. Everything will depend on the evolution of the COVID-19 in the country: at the moment, in Calcio there are six teams in quarantine (Juventus, Inter, Sampdoria, Verona, Fiorentina and Udinese) and eleven infected players: Rugani, Gabbiadini, Colley, Thorsby, Ekdal, La Gumina, Vlahovic, Cutrone, Pezzella, Depaoli and Bereszynski.
