Serena's coach: “I'm not sure if the US Open can be played”

Patrick Mouratoglou has doubts about holding the US Open from August 31 to October 13 in New York. In an interview to Sky Sports, the coach of Serena Williams was cautious about the tournament following the latest news about the rebound in coronavirus cases in the United States. “With what is happening and seeing that infections are increasing every day, I am not sure that the US Open can be held. From the outside it seems crazy to be held”, said the preparer.

Mouratoglou, who for several weeks has launched the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in his academy in Nice with the presence of tennis players such as Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas or Feliciano López among others, he believes that, if the return of tennis had been in Europe, the situation would have been different given the current situation of the pandemic on the continent European. “I would not say this if the situation in the United States were controlled as in Europe, it would be another story. But in the United States and in New York there are still a high number of cases.”

In fact, the coach calls for an urgent decision to be made about the tournament given the current situation in New York, which became the epicenter of the pandemic. “I do not know if it would be reasonable and if it could happen at the last moment that the New York governor decides to cancel the tournament. The health of tennis players is the priority,” Mouratoglou said.
