MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
England coach Sarina Wiegman predicted on Tuesday that Spain “will have a lot of the ball” in the European Championship quarter-final match, while highlighting the depth of her squad as an English “strength”.
“I think now we are in a different moment (in the last game against Spain they only had 20 per cent of the possession). I think we will have a little more possession, but Spain will have a lot of the ball, that is how they play, with their game of possession and pressing with the ball”, analyzed the coach in statements to UEFA before the duel against the Spanish this Wednesday (9:00 p.m.) for a place in the tournament semifinals.
“We want to play our best game. If necessary, we know we can make changes and we have players who can really make an impact in the game off the bench and that could give an extra boost. We’ve shown that in the other games, so that’s something we take into account. It’s a strength of our team”, Wiegman praised his team, which has completed a perfect EURO group stage, with plenty of wins, 14 goals for and none against.
The coach remains in isolation after testing positive for COVID. “It has been different. You just have to adapt to the situation and make the best of it. I saw on a screen, I had contact with the coaching staff and all the rest of the days I have been very connected with the team,” said the technician who trusts to sit on the bench against Spain.
A situation that has not disrupted the squad, as reported by the English defender Leah Williamson. “Sarina Wiegman has remained very well connected with us, her influence on the team has been as normal as possible,” she explained at the press conference prior to Wednesday’s match.
“The ideal would be for all of them to be available, but we are lucky to be such a well-prepared team. Despite the frustration, it doesn’t upset us at all,” the footballer settled on the team’s casualties.
