Rybakina goes back to Jabeur and raises his first ‘Grand Slam’ at Wimbledon

MADRID, 9 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Kazakh tennis player Elena Rybakina came from behind to beat the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) in the unprecedented Wimbledon final and become the first player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam singles title.

In a final that went to the hour and 47 minutes of play, Rybakina managed to overcome the loss of the first set to, with a fast game that made Jabeur agonize, end up coming back to release his record of ‘greats’.

Rybakina, born in Moscow but competing for Kazakhstan since 2018, won the Wimbledon tournament marked by the veto of Russian and Belarusian tennis players at the age of 23, to be the youngest tennis player capable of winning at the All England Club since she did. Petra Kvitova in 2011.

With this victory, the Kazakh surprised the number 2 in the WTA ranking, an Ons Jabeur who had just won her last eleven matches. But the Tunisian succumbed on a physical level when, after winning the first round and being the favorite, she seemed to have everything in her face.

The 27-year-old Jabeur won seven points in a row when he broke in the third game of the match and then walked away with another eight points in a row in the last two games. But Rybakina converted her first break point in the first game of the second set, saved four break points in her next two service games and leveled the sets two games later with an ace.

Rybakina kept things high and broke Jabeur again early in the decider with a volley winner, then battled back from 0-40 on serve to hold at 4-2 with five unanswered points en route to victory in the second set, by a 6-2 that was repeated in the final round to celebrate their historic victory.
