The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Tuesday that Russian teams and referees “will not be allowed to participate” in their competitions “until further notice”, after the war started by Russia in Ukraine, the agency said in a statement. .
“In line with the resolution and reasoning of the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee, FIBA has announced today that Russian teams and referees will not be allowed to participate in FIBA and 3×3 competitions until further notice,” FIBA said.
The federation insisted that it “remains very concerned” about all the recent events in Ukraine and expresses its “strongest support and condolences for the victims.” “FIBA categorically condemns the violence and urgently wants peace to prevail,” the text added.
The body will communicate future decisions at the Central Board meeting that will take place on March 25 and also in the coming days by the bodies of the European zone of FIBA.
A decision that comes after the Euroleague decided to suspend the participation of the Russian teams CSKA Moscow, UNICS Kazan and Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Euroleague and Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar in the Eurocup.
