The Russian Football Union (UFR) reported this Thursday that it will hold consultations with FIFA and UEFA after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the penalty imposed on Russian sport for collusion with doping to two years.
“We will hold additional consultations with FIFA and UEFA to assess their impact (of the sanction) on our national teams and the holding of international tournaments in Russia.”, says a statement from the UFR.
Russia is qualified for the Eurocup, but the sanction does not apply to continental competitions, so you can participate with your shield and under your flag.
Regarding the World Cup in Qatar, it is not clear if the sanction proposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will affect the Russian team in case it is classified in the European Group H that it shares with Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta.
In this regard, the president of the Russian Olympic Committee (COR), Stanislav Pozdniakov, was convinced that the Russian footballers will play in Qatar if they manage to pass the qualifying phase.
It may also happen that Russian footballers are cleared to compete, but must do so as neutrals, as will happen with other athletes in the country at World Cups and Olympic Games.
St. Petersburg should have no problem hosting three first-round matches next summer and one of the quarterfinals of the Eurocup, like the final of the Champions League in 2022.
The CEO of the Eurocup in the old imperial capital, Alexei Sorokin, assured this Thursday that neither of those two tournaments will be affected by the ruling of the TAS, as will happen with the 2023 European Super Cup in Kazan, already outside the term of the sanction.
